PETALING JAYA: Bersatu's decision to field candidates against Perikatan Nasional in at least eight Negri Sembilan seats has triggered calls to review the party's coalition membership after the state election.
Perikatan information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa (pic) said that based on the coalition's convention, Bersatu's move to contest against Perikatan would effectively nullify its membership.
"Based on convention, this would mean Bersatu's membership in Perikatan is automatically terminated.
"However, the matter must first be examined according to the coalition's constitution. For now, the priority is to settle matters related to the state election. The issue will likely only be discussed after the polls," he said in a Facebook posting on Saturday (July 18).
On Friday (July 17), Bersatu announced it would contest 24 seats in the Negri Sembilan election, resulting in direct contests with Perikatan component parties in at least eight constituencies.
"Bersatu's participation appears to be a move that benefits DAP and Pakatan Harapan. We leave it to the people to judge," said Annuar.
The party decided to drop the Perikatan logo after seat negotiations within the coalition broke down amid PAS’ move towards cooperation with Barisan Nasional, which is contesting 25 of the state’s 36 seats.
Nomination is today (July 18), with polling set for Aug 1.
