Negri polls: Cops to intensify social media monitoring, says state’s top cop


SEREMBAN: The police have reiterated warnings against spreading slander or malicious comments during the Negri Sembilan state election. 

Negri Sembilan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the police's social media monitoring would be intensified during the period and that wrongdoers would face investigation regardless of their status or background.

"We wish to remind the public to be responsible when using social media throughout the election.

"Do not upload, share or spread any statement that could incite hatred, enmity, racial and religious tension or touch on the royal institution," he said in a statement.

DCP Alzafny said the police took a serious view of any dissemination of comments containing elements of incitement, provocation, fake news, or content that can disrupt public order, threaten national security and affect harmony.

He said stern action will be taken against the wrongdoers in accordance with provisions under the Penal Code, the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Sedition Act 1948 and other relevant laws.

On Thursday, DCP Alzafny reminded political parties and their supporters to strictly obey the law throughout the election period or face the consequences.

He issued the reminder following a meeting with political party representatives here, where they were briefed on security protocols, legal compliance and party responsibilities during the period that begins from nomination this Saturday (July 18) until the final election results are announced on Aug 1.
