SHAH ALAM: The VAT 69 commandos clinched first prize at the Police’s Hari Inovasi for developing an explosive-equipped drone prototype, proving their excellence both on and off the field.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department deputy director (operations) Deputy Comm MV Sri Kumar praised the win at the Selangor police contingent headquarters on Thursday (July 16), stating it proves the commandos are not only the country’s finest officers but also among its most intelligent, bringing pride to the entire police force.
Team leader Deputy Supt Muhammad Ridhuan Basri explained that the modified drone is designed to aid offensive operations at a fraction of the cost, estimating that it could reduce operational expenses tenfold.
“We brainstormed on how to save on both manpower and costs when out in operations, for example in Sabah. So we constructed this drone as a way to solve that issue.
“We are not saying that we do not continue using more conventional systems, but this is a good plan B when needed. When the conventional methods face issues, we can resort to this to help conduct operations,” he said.
Earlier, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay highlighted the evolving complexity of crime, including the manipulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
"The Smart Policing initiative being developed is not merely about the use of modern technology, but also encompasses a culture of data-driven decision-making, digital service delivery, and operational management that is more responsive, accurate, and conducted with integrity.
“I am proud of the innovation initiatives undertaken through research and development efforts aimed at harnessing digital technology and AI-based applications, in line with the transformation direction of the police and the Home Ministry,” he said.
