KUALA LUMPUR: High data traffic, cable theft, and wildlife disruptions are among the core reasons mobile users experience zero internet access despite showing full signal bars, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Wednesday (July 15).
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching explained that Quality of Service (QoS) is frequently impacted by network capacity congestion, transmission link failures, fibre optic cuts, natural disasters, and vandalism. Users' individual device settings, hardware conditions, and data quotas also affect performance.
Responding to Datuk Anyi Ngau (GPS-Baram) regarding plans to address core network failures, Teo said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and service providers are actively upgrading infrastructure under the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela).
To minimise disruptions, service providers have implemented link redundancies, alternative routing, and 24-hour network monitoring to prevent single points of failure. Site-hardening measures, including steel trunking for copper cables, have also been deployed at high-risk towers to deter theft and vandalism.
“Complaints and feedback from the public through the MCMC NEXUS application and the MCMC complaints portal at https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my are also always welcome to help identify issues on the ground and support continuous service improvement efforts,” said Teo.
