Abang Jo in no rush to call Sarawak polls

KUCHING: Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg appears to be in no rush to call the next state election.

"I'm not thinking about elections. I'm thinking about how to increase revenue to give back to the people so that they can benefit from our rapid development.

"So I am not thinking about the election at the moment," he told reporters when met on Monday (July 13).

His remarks came after Barisan Nasional's landslide victory in the Johor state election raised speculation on whether the 16th general election would be called soon.

Abang Johari declined to give any indications when pressed on whether he would wait for the Sarawak Legislative Assembly to reach its full term.

"I don't know. If the full term ends, it ends. That's in February.

"Just wait until February. If the election happens, it happens," he joked.

The next state election is due in April next year, 60 days after the state assembly's term expires.

However, it can be called earlier at the Premier's discretion.
