MELAKA: A long-awaited boost is on the way for fishermen in Pasir Gembur in Tanjung Bidara here, after the state government approved a raft of measures, including the construction of a new fishermen's jetty and improvements to the area's navigation channel.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the decisions were reached following his visit to the area. During the visit, he met members of the local fishing community, inspected the proposed site for the new jetty and received first-hand feedback on issues affecting their livelihood.
He said the initiative reflected the commitment of the state under the Melaka Sayang Rakyat (MeSRa) agenda, which was a commitment translated into tangible solutions that directly benefit the people.
"I came to meet the local community and fishermen, inspect the progress of the proposed fishermen's jetty and hear directly the challenges they face so that every issue can be addressed through practical and effective action," he said on Wednesday (July 8).
To ensure the project progresses smoothly, he convened representatives from the Public Works Department, Irrigation and Drainage Department, Alor Gajah Municipal Council and other relevant agencies to coordinate follow-up measures.
Among the decisions reached, Ab Rauf said relevant authorities have been directed to undertake a feasibility study on dredging the navigation channel used by fishing boats between Pasir Gembur and Batu Tenggek to improve accessibility and safety.
"Stakeholders have also been tasked with preparing the site for the new fishermen's jetty at a higher and more suitable level," he said.
He explained that this elevation is necessary to reduce the risk of seawater inundation and flooding during periods of exceptionally high tides.
Ab Rauf said the state government had also decided that no further private development would be permitted within the coastal breakwater area to safeguard the shoreline and public infrastructure.
He added that any structure within the coastal reserve must first obtain a Temporary Occupation Licence from the authorities and secure clearance from the relevant technical agencies before any work can proceed.
"The well-being of our fishermen remains a priority, and the state government will continue to monitor the implementation of these initiatives to ensure they deliver meaningful and lasting benefits to the community," he added.
