MetMalaysia issues afternoon thunderstorm warning for multiple states, including Klang Valley


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a weather warning this afternoon, predicting severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds across several states and federal territories until 4.00pm on Sunday 5 July 2026.

The warning, issued at 1.30pm, advises residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions against sudden downpours, potential flash floods, and reduced visibility.

In the central region, the adverse weather is expected to impact the entirety of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, alongside multiple districts in Selangor, including Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat, and Sepang.

Across the rest of Peninsular Malaysia, affected areas span Kelantan (Jeli, Kuala Krai, and Gua Musang), Terengganu (Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun, and Kemaman), Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Raub, Bentong, Pekan, and Rompin), Negri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, and Port Dickson), and Johor (Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Baru).

East Malaysia is also bracing for the stormy weather, with warnings in place for Sarawak covering Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong (Pusa and Betong), Kapit (Song, Kapit, and Bukit Mabong), and Limbang. In Sabah, the affected zones include the Interior (Sipitang, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, and Tambunan), West Coast (Papar, Penampang, and Ranau), and Kudat (Kota Marudu).

According to MetMalaysia, warnings are issued when there are indications of a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than an hour. A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single issue.
