BACHOK: A mother was left heartbroken when she arrived at the scene in Kampung Permatang Pasir, Gunong to find her only son’s body covered with a cloth after he was hit by a coconut tree while riding a motorcycle with a friend here on Thursday.
Even more heartbreaking, Nik Mohd Haikal Abd Rahim, 17, who was an SPM candidate at SMK Sri Gunong, did not get to complete his trial examination, which had only started two days earlier, after he was killed in the incident, reported Sinar Harian.
His mother, Raja Ruhana Raja Mejan, 53, said her only son had only managed to sit for the Bahasa Melayu trial paper, after taking the Bahasa Melayu and English listening tests the day before.
She said that before the incident, her son left their home in Kampung Bukit Cendol, Gunong, at 5.45pm on a motorcycle, with his close friend, Ahmad Iqbal Mukmin, 17, riding pillion.
She said her late son did not show any changes before leaving the house and had only told her that the SPM trial examination had started.
“Yesterday, he went for the Bahasa Melayu and English listening tests.
“Earlier, he went to school and completed Bahasa Melayu Paper 1 and Paper 2.
“He did tell me that the trial examination had started, but he did not show any changes or say anything before leaving the house that evening,” she said when met at the Forensic Medicine Unit of Hospital Bachok here on Thursday.
Also seen at the hospital was Kelantan Education Department planning and district education office management sector deputy director Azhan Anuar, who rushed there and visited the victim’s family.
In the incident at about 6pm, Nik Mohd Haikal, who was riding the motorcycle, died at the scene from head injuries after the motorcycle was hit by a falling coconut tree during heavy rain and strong winds.
Raja Ruhana said she found out about the accident after another of her son’s friends came to the house and told her Nik Mohd Haikal had been hit by a coconut tree.
“I went straight to the scene with my son’s friend, but when I arrived, Nik Mohd Haikal’s body had already been covered with a cloth.
“I knew then that he was gone,” she said tearfully.
She said the incident happened about eight kilometres from their home as her son was passing through a route near padi fields and an irrigation canal.
She said her son was the youngest of four siblings and the only boy in the family.
She said she had previously lost two daughters when they were still young.
Her eldest child died at the age of five from heart disease, while her third child died from illness at the age of two.
“Nik Mohd Haikal was my only son and was very close to me, but I accept this,” she said.
His body will be buried at the Kampung Mujur Muslim cemetery on Friday.
