Withdraw remarks linking MCA to PAS support in Johor, says Dr Wee in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong demanded the withdrawal of remarks linking MCA to PAS support in Johor, describing them as slanderous towards the party during a brief exchange in the Dewan Rakyat.

The exchange took place on Thursday (July 2) after the Ayer Hitam MP had concluded his question to Transport Minister Anthony Loke on the Johor Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (E-ART) project.

As Deputy Speaker Alice Lau was preparing to move on to the next question, Kampar MP Chong Zhemin sought permission under Standing Order 24(3) to ask an additional supplementary question. Lau declined the request.

Chong, however, argued that the question concerned Johor and asserted that PAS had given its votes to MCA in the state, saying this was why a question should be allowed to be raised.

In return, Dr Wee immediately rose to object, demanding that the remarks be withdrawn.

"I ask that the statement be withdrawn. This is slander," he said.

Soon after, MPs microphones were turned off.

Lau also did not entertain Chong's request and instead called on Kangar MP Zakri Hassan to proceed with the next question, which was directed to the Works Minister.

The proceedings then continued.
