PUTRAJAYA: The government will begin taking action on Wednesday (Aug 26) against unregulated e-commerce platforms, following almost 2,000 public complaints over online scams, questionable halal labels and uncertified electrical and electronic products.
Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the issue was raised during an e-commerce summit, where a participant questioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about sellers operating without proper monitoring.
Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) received 1,964 complaints from Jan 1, 2025, to Aug 25 this year over products sold on e-commerce platforms and related matters, including scams.
"A total of 1,147 complaints were received last year, and 817 were received from Jan 1 this year until Aug 25 (yesterday). Out of this total, 118 complaints are still being acted upon by MCMC.
"Among the matters raised in these complaints were electrical or electronic products, and the authenticity of the halal status of the products sold," he said at a press conference on Wednesday (Aug 26).
He added that the crackdown would involve the Communications and Finance Ministries following a Cabinet directive.
