Border agency sacks five officers, probes 50 others for integrity breaches

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has dismissed five officers and is investigating 50 others for integrity-related offences as it intensifies efforts to stamp out corruption and misconduct.

AKPS director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said 15 more officers are currently facing disciplinary proceedings.

"Since we began operations less than a year ago, we have terminated the services of five officers, while 15 are undergoing disciplinary proceedings and 50 remain under active investigation," he said at the agency's monthly assembly here on Wednesday (July 1).

Comm Shuhaily said corruption and misconduct remained among his biggest concerns and vowed to take a zero-tolerance approach towards integrity breaches.

"The culture of corruption and misconduct among officers must come to an end," he said.

He added that veteran enforcement personnel would be given a bigger role in strengthening discipline, particularly at the country's main entry points.

He stressed that his intention was not to make dismissals a key performance indicator (KPI), but to reduce the number of officers who lose their jobs because of corruption and abuse of power.

He also urged his officers to uphold integrity and use the authority entrusted to them responsibly.

"Integrity is not merely about having clean hands, but about having a heart that cannot be bought, a tongue that does not bow to lies, and feet that do not stray from the path of truth," he said.
