Man dies after jumping off flyover while fleeing cops

KUALA LUMPUR: A man died after jumping from a flyover while trying to escape police at Jalan Pantai Dalam on Wednesday (June 24).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the 7.45pm incident unfolded when a Mobile Patrol Vehicle team from the Petaling Jaya Police Station, on a crime-prevention patrol, spotted a Proton Wira carrying three men suspected of involvement in criminal activity.

He said police pursued the car from the New Pantai Expressway near the Taman Dato Harun toll plaza to Jalan Pantai Dalam before it was involved in an accident at 9.50pm.

"The Proton Wira rammed into a Perodua Axia travelling in the same lane before the police vehicle moved in to block it, resulting in a side-impact collision with the patrol car," he said in a statement on Thursday (June 25).

Comm Fadil said the driver of the Proton Wira exited the vehicle and is believed to have jumped from the flyover. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said the body was sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) Forensic Unit for a post-mortem. The case has been classified as sudden death.

Fadil added that the other two men, aged 29 and 31, who were in the Proton Wira, were detained to assist in the investigation. One of them suffered a broken right leg and is receiving treatment at UMMC.

"Further checks of the suspects' vehicle led to the discovery of a bag containing substances suspected to be syabu (methamphetamine) and yaba pills, while one suspect tested positive for methamphetamine," he said.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya deputy police chief Supt M. Hussin Sollehuddin Zolkifly said checks revealed the two detained individuals have five prior criminal records, four drug-related records, and are wanted for a drug case.

The case is being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the accident investigation is being handled under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.- Bernama
