Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for three northern states until 3pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain across three northern states in Peninsular Malaysia, effective until 3pm on Wednesday (June 24).

In Kedah, the areas expected to experience severe weather include Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu.

The warning covers the entirety of Pulau Pinang, specifically identifying Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah, and Seberang Perai Selatan.

Meanwhile, affected locations in Perak encompass Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, and Hilir Perak.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 11.55am on Wednesday.
