Proposed law to strengthen management of all museums in FTs

JOHOR BARU: Governance of the museum sector will be strengthened through a proposed Malaysia Museums law, says National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.

He added that the Malaysia Museums Bill, which applies to all museums within the Federal Territories, received approval in principle from the Cabinet on April 29.

"The legislation will be a major milestone for the museum sector by providing a dedicated legal framework for the establishment, registration, management and preservation of museums and national collections in a more systematic and sustainable manner.

"The proposed law represents a significant shift in strengthening governance within the sector and will be the first federal legislation specifically designed to regulate museums," he said in his speech when officiating the National-Level International Museum Day Festival 2026 at a mall here on Wednesday (June 24).

He added that the Bill reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring museums remain relevant institutions for education, heritage preservation, human capital development and nation-building.

Aaron also said museums today play a far greater role than merely displaying historical artefacts, serving as living institutions, knowledge hubs and custodians of collective memory that help Malaysians better understand their shared history and identity.
