SEGAMAT: The annual grant for Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) nationwide will be increased to RM10,000 from RM6,000 beginning Jan 1 next year, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the grant had remained unchanged at RM6,000 for the past decade despite the important role played by KRTs in fostering unity and strengthening community participation.
"For the KRT, I agree to increase the allocation from RM6,000 to RM10,000 for all KRTs.
"Once their activity reports and financial reports are submitted within the next one to two months, the RM10,000 allocation will be channelled beginning Jan 1, 2027," he said at the Program Madani Kita Bersama Kawasan Rukun Tetangga event here on Wednesday (June 24).
Anwar also announced an immediate allocation of RM1mil for urgent repairs and upgrading works at police quarters in Johor.
He said he had personally observed the condition of several police housing facilities and found that some required immediate attention.
"While waiting for the Budget, I do not think we should delay.
"I am approving RM1mil immediately to be distributed for urgent repairs before the Budget is tabled in October," he said.
Anwar also announced RM3.205mil for repairs and infrastructure upgrading works involving 16 Islamic education institutions across Johor.
The allocation will benefit pondok schools, tahfiz institutions and madrasahs in districts including Batu Pahat, Segamat, Kulai, Pontian and Johor Baru.
Speaking before hundreds of KRT members, Anwar stressed that Malaysia's strength lies in its ability to preserve harmony among its diverse communities.
He said the country's future depended on unity, mutual respect and the willingness of Malaysians of different races and faiths to work together.
"We have different races, religions and cultures, but that diversity is our strength.
"What is important is that we ensure our children receive a good education, have opportunities for employment and live in a peaceful and stable country," he said.
Anwar said KRT members played an important role in promoting neighbourliness, helping to address local issues and strengthening cooperation between communities and government agencies.
He noted that Malaysia's stability and unity had also contributed to growing international confidence in the country, helping attract investment and strengthen diplomatic ties.
