KOTA KINABALU: The people should give the federal unity government the opportunity to complete its full term before the next general election is held, says Datuk Chin Su Phin said.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president said any effort to push for an early dissolution of Parliament before the end of its term in December next year should not be driven by political or personal interests.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Madani unity government has managed to maintain political stability and national harmony, while the economy continues to grow steadily, said Chin, whose LDP is part of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition government.
“Since Anwar took over the country’s administration in Nov 2022, Malaysia has faced various challenges including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Israel-Gaza war, and the Iran war, all of which have affected oil prices and inflation,” he said during the Sandakan LDP division meeting.
Chin said people are facing rising living costs and reforms such as the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) and e-Invoicing and hoped the government would continue listening to public concerns and improve policy implementation to ease their burden.
He said that Anwar’s achievements should not be directly compared with Barisan Nasional’s record of more than six decades in power, as Anwar’s administration has only been in place for over three years.
The outcome of the Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections does not necessarily reflect the results of a general election, he added.
He said Pakatan Harapan still had a good chance to defend its mandate.
Chin also observed that the DAP continues to retain significant support among Chinese voters despite facing challenges in the Negri Sembilan state election.
