KOTA TINGGI: The Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections should not be used as platforms to incite hatred, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Umno vice-president said the campaign period for both state polls should instead be used to unite people from different backgrounds.

“All political parties should use democracy to offer ideas and solutions to the rakyat. Campaign prudently, without resorting to baseless attacks.

“We want to see a more united people and the formation of a stronger government,” he told reporters after attending a programme at Felda Ayer Tawar 2 yesterday.

Mohamed Khaled added that Barisan Nasional would adopt a modest campaign strategy for both state polls.

He said this was to avoid Barisan falling into the trap of slander and divisive politics during the campaign periods.

“Democracy has long been practised in the country and has become the foundation of stability and development.

“It should be preserved,” he said.

The Johor state election has been set for July 11, with nomination on June 27, while Negri Sembilan will go to the polls on Aug 1 following nomination on July 18.
