Fisherman catches 10kg croc in river near Sg Lereh flats in Melaka

MELAKA: It was the ultimate "one that didn't get away" for a local angler when he caught a 10kg saltwater crocodile in Sungai Lereh here.

Klebang assemblyman Datuk Lim Ban Hong said the crocodile got stuck in the angler's net at about 9 am on Saturday (June 20).

"It is not the first time crocodiles have been sighted on the riverbank close to residential areas.

"Locals have voiced concern as children from Sungai Lereh Flats often play at the riverbank.

"I have requested authorities to erect signboards around the area to warn people to watch out for crocodiles," he said.

Lim said Sungai Lereh could be a natural habitat for the crocodiles and rapid development has caused the reptiles to venture into residential areas.

Lim also urged locals not to capture wild animals by themselves and to alert the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) if they come across any.

"Residents attempted to capture and tie up the crocodile, which was risky," he said.
