Water surge sweeps away bridge in Gopeng, 69 evacuated

IPOH: Some 69 people from 20 families in Gopeng have been sent to a temporary relief centre following a water surge incident that swept away a bridge at Ulu Geruntum in Gopeng.

A Perak Disaster Management Committee spokesman said the victims were moved into the relief centre at the Gopeng Town Hall at about 2pm on Saturday (June 20) following the incident on Friday (June 19) evening.

"Some 23 people, including a pregnant lady and three babies, were trapped at Kampung Ulu Geruntum.

"Another 30 people were unable to return home after the bridge collapsed," said Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad.

The water surge is believed to have been caused by heavy rainfall in the area.
