Fahmi calls for stronger Asean media collaboration to combat misinformation

BUTTERWORTH: Media professionals across the Asean region are urged to strengthen cross-border collaboration to promote accurate reporting and combat the rise of misinformation.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said fostering closer partnerships, sharing knowledge and exchanging best practices among the regional media community are vital to advancing regional peace, stability and prosperity.

"Media serves as the lifeblood that connects people to current realities. It acts as a bridge between policymakers and implementers and between events and public understanding. With information flowing faster than ever and narratives constantly competing for attention, journalism rooted in truth, integrity and responsibility remains indispensable,” he said.

Fahmi made the remarks while delivering his speech at the state government dinner with Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2026 celebration here on Friday (June 19).

In his speech, Fahmi added that the Hawana 2026 celebration aims not only to recognise the media's role as a strategic partner in national development, but also serves as a platform to reinforce the commitment to the continuous uplifting of the journalism profession in an increasingly challenging era.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Penang State Government for its willingness to host the Hawana 2026 celebration and to organise tonight's event.

"The commitment and support provided reflect this state's high respect for the significant role and contribution of the media fraternity to society and the nation,” he said.

Also present were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Penang State Secretary Datuk Seri Zulkifli Long, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Strategic Communications and Creative Industries) Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil.

Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama chief executive officer and chairman of the Hawana 2026 Working Committee Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, top management from local media companies and representatives of Asean Communications Ministers were also in attendance. – Bernama
