PETALING JAYA: A nationwide police operation has swept up 58 people in 52 raids to curb illegal sports betting and online gambling activities in conjunction with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the integrated Ops Soga XI, running from last Thursday (June 11) until July 19, involves several agencies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
He said 54 men and four women were arrested for alleged illegal betting and online gambling activities.
“A total of RM25,684.65 in cash was seized during the operation, along with betting transactions amounting to RM488,582.47,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Comm M. Kumar said police also identified 42 platforms used for football betting and gambling promotions, including websites, applications, social media accounts and other online platforms.
“Following this, action will be taken to block the websites and remove related content with the assistance of MCMC.
“All suspects have been brought to the respective district police headquarters for documentation and further investigations in accordance with existing laws,” he said.
He added that the cases are being investigated under Sections 6(1) and 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953 and Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
“Investigations are also being conducted under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).
“The police will continue to intensify operations and enforcement efforts while strengthening strategic cooperation with relevant agencies to combat illegal gambling activities,” he said.
Comm M. Kumar also urged the public to provide information to the authorities to assist efforts in combating such activities.
