Increased traffic fines, making police reports online among proposed amendments to Road Transport Act

PETALING JAYA: Amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 will be tabled at the next Parliament meeting beginning June 22, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said the amendment Bill comprises 11 scopes of reform involving 42 provisions.

"The first reading will be on Monday (June 22) and the second reading on Tuesday," he said during a special media briefing on Wednesday (June 18).

Loke said the amendments are necessary as the transport sector and enforcement mechanisms are becoming increasingly digital, requiring the law to evolve accordingly.

"The last amendments to the Act were made in 2020," he said.

He added that another amendment Bill relating to compensation for victims of drink driving would also be tabled by the end of this year's parliamentary session.

Among the proposed amendments are increases in traffic fines, measures to address illegal street racing and the introduction of making police reports online.

The amendments will also provide clearer powers for the minister to regulate workshops, vehicle standards and service fees to improve safety and industry compliance.

Also included are enforcement measures against syndicates of lookouts or informants (tonto) who warn offenders of enforcement operations.

"There will also be a clearer legal framework involving micro-mobility vehicles such as e-scooters and e-bikes. This is to ensure safety, order and accountability on Malaysian roads.
