Deadly fire forces cattery to seek new site

IPOH: A cattery is planning to relocate its operations to a new site due to safety concerns at its current premises in Simpang Pulai.

Noah’s Ark Ipoh founder Dr Ranjit Kaur Mendhir said the move was necessary after the facility, located near a limestone hill, was deemed unsafe following a fire that killed several cats in April.

“We’ve had numerous incidents of trees and rocks falling on top of our roof. The fire was the most devastating incident.

“We are currently renting a shophouse in Tambun to shelter about 20 cats.

“I have suggested to the committee to find a piece of land with an existing building so we only need to do renovation works and set up a proper shelter for the cats,” she said, adding that the existing premises still houses about eight dogs.

“We’ve cleaned the location and have yet to finalise what to do with it.

“Perhaps we can use it as a temporary isolation shelter for cats requiring treatment,” she said.

Dr Ranjit said the monthly rental paid to the Batu Gajah district council is about RM1,400.

She said Ipoh requires a dedicated cattery due to limited facilities in the area.

She also expressed hope that more young people would join the organisation to support its work.

“Most of us are seniors. We hope to have young blood to take over,” Dr Ranjit added.
