MUAR: While most septuagenarians prefer the quiet comfort of retirement, Muhammad Razi Tahar, 73, chooses to continue working with his fingers and thumbs to bring relief to his customers.
In fact, he has no plans to slow down as a reflexologist.
Every morning, his routine begins with a 15km bus ride from his home in Bakri to Muar town, before taking a 20-minute walk to Tanjung Emas, a popular recreational spot, to set up his station.
“My set-up is pretty simple – a reclining chair, a stool and banner advertising my services.
“My greatest motivation is being able to help ease the people’s pain and making them feel better. As long as I am still healthy and able, I will continue to do this,” he said in an interview.
Muhammad Razi, who has been working as a foot reflexologist for the past 26 years, said he entered the trade at the age of 47 after an unsuccessful attempt at running a business.
He said a friend introduced him to foot reflexology and taught him the basics.
Intrigued by the practice, he continued learning on his own by studying materials he found online and refining his skills through hands-on experience.
“To build my initial customer base, I went from house to house in my village to offer reflexology services and gradually gained the trust of residents.
“The improvement of my techniques over the years was largely thanks to customers who were willing to let me practise and provide feedback,” he said.
Muhammad Razi said foot reflexology requires more than just applying pressure as it can provide relief and health benefits to the receiver when delivered properly.
“A good reflexologist must also know how much pressure to use because every person has a different level of tolerance.
“It is both a skill and an art. When you focus and put your heart into it, you can understand what each customer needs,” he said.
Muhammad Razi’s friendly personality has earned him many regular customers, some of whom have been returning for years.
He added that his family is supportive of his decision to remain active as they know the work not only provides him with a sense of purpose but also keeps him physically and socially engaged.
“On most days, I attend to at least five customers. Although the income is unpredictable, the satisfaction of helping others has always mattered more to me,” he said.
“When I help others, I believe God blesses me with good health, too. I get to meet people and help them relax – that makes me happy.”
