PAS calls it quits with Bersatu

Decision made based on current reports and analysis, says Abdul Hadi

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS has decided to terminate its political cooperation with Bersatu, says party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic).

He said this after a special meeting of the PAS central working committee at the party’s headquarters yesterday night.

“We have decided to terminate all political cooperation with Bersatu and to review the position and future direction of PAS-Bersatu relations based on current reports, studies, and assessments.

“We endorse the decision of the Syura Council of Ulama meeting on June 2 regarding policy, legal (syariah), and public interest (maslahah) considerations concerning our political cooperation, based on the principle of Muslim unity.

“We will explore a form of political understanding and electoral cooperation (electoral pact) for the sake of Muslim unity, in preparation for the state elections and the 16th General Election,” he said.

Abdul Hadi also said PAS welcomes the intention of academics, professionals, political leaders, and community activists to join the party.

The leaders of PAS and Bersatu – the two main components and co-founders of Perikatan Nasional – have been butting heads since last December.

Relations between the two parties soured after the Perlis Mentri Besar saga last year, which saw PAS’ Mohd Shukri Ramli ousted and was replaced by Bersatu’s Abu Bakar Hamzah.

PAS leaders criticised Bersatu over this, which later led to the resignation of Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the Perikatan chairman.

On May 22, Abdul Hadi had said that PAS will review its cooperation with Bersatu in Perikatan.

He claimed that Bersatu had not kept its promises and had allegedly stopped other political parties from joining the coalition.

On Sunday, Bersatu reiterated its commitment to maintain good relations with PAS in the Perikatan coalition.

Muhyiddin had received a letter from PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan dated June 6.

The letter is said to have addressed ties between the two parties, along with suggestions to strengthen Perikatan.
