GEORGE TOWN: Mutiara Line LRT stations at the airport and Bandar Sri Pinang are seeing the fastest construction progress along the alignment since work began.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Penangites would soon get a clearer picture of the appearance of the stations.
Their designs are currently awaiting final approval from the Penang Island City Council.
Speaking after visiting both construction sites on Friday (June 6), Chow said work at the two stations had made the most progress since the groundbreaking ceremony at Bandar Sri Pinang in January last year.
At the Penang International Airport station site, construction of station piers and the viaduct is progressing well with five piers already taking shape.
At the Bandar Sri Pinang station near Persiaran Karpal Singh, foundation and column works have been completed.
The project is set to enter the next phase involving the installation of crossheads.
Crossheads are large concrete structures installed atop station columns and serve as the main support framework for the station.
Chow said construction activities along the 23.7km alignment from Komtar to Silicon Island were expected to intensify in the second half of the year.
The public should be prepared for temporary traffic disruptions as traffic management plans are implemented.
Some lanes will be closed in stages for construction works.
Pier construction is under way at 14 locations along the alignment, including Permatang Damar Laut, Gelugor, SPICE, East Jelutong, Macallum and the area near Cecil Residensi.
Chow said the first of three critical traffic management plan zones had been implemented at the Jalan Tengah-Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah junction in early May.
The remaining two zones are scheduled for the second half of the year.
He called on Penangites to continue supporting this Federal Government project for the future of the state.
