CHUKAI: Three four-month-old White Bengal tiger cubs, unveiled to the public for the first time on Saturday (July 25), have become the newest attraction at Kemaman Zoo in Bukit Takal, Kijal.
State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman Datuk Razali Idris said the three male cubs, named Rory, Bima and DB, were born to White Bengal tiger pair Lela Andika and Luna Seroja.
He said the cubs were born at Kemaman Zoo on March 14 after Luna Seroja completed a 104-day gestation period.
"The birth of these three cubs is a remarkable achievement because it is a rare occurrence for White Bengal tigers.
"White Bengal tigers typically give birth to only one or two cubs per litter. This time, however, Luna Seroja delivered three male cubs, making the birth especially significant,” he told reporters after the official unveiling ceremony for the cubs at Kemaman Zoo on Saturday (July 25).
White Bengal tigers (Panthera tigris tigris) are a rare genetic variant known for their distinctive white coats and black stripes, making them one of the most popular attractions in zoos around the world.
Razali said the cubs’ two-year-old parents were brought to the zoo from Cape Town, South Africa, in 2024.
He said the cubs are being closely monitored by the zoo’s veterinary team and animal keepers to ensure their health and growth remain optimal.
"Beyond serving as a tourist attraction, we hope visitors will gain a greater understanding of the importance of conserving endangered species and appreciate the country’s wildlife,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kemaman Zoo director Wan Muzammir Wan Ariff said the zoo, which opened to the public in 2009, is home to about 380 animals from various species.
He said the zoo welcomed about one million visitors last year and the number of visitors is expected to increase to over 1.5 million this year with the debut of the three White Bengal tiger cubs. - Bernama
