SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan Legislative Assembly has been dissolved effective today.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun made the announcement at around 11.30pm last night.
“We are returning the mandate to the people,” he said.
Aminuddin said Negri Sembilan Ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir had given consent to dissolve the state assembly.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had an audience with the Ruler.
The meeting was to confirm that the dissolution had the agreement of the Prime Minister.
Asked if the move was sudden, Aminuddin said “not really”.
“Everybody has been hearing about it since Wednesday, now I am confirming it.”
Talk of the 36-member state assembly being dissolved has been making the rounds since the beginning of the week.
According to sources, state Pakatan Harapan leaders, during a recent meeting, had tentatively agreed on the number of seats each party will contest.
A source said Pakatan component parties PKR will contest 16, DAP (11) and Amanah (nine).
Talk of dissolution gained momentum on Wednesday when Aminuddin sought an audience with Tuanku Muhriz early in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
The last state polls were held on Aug 12, 2023.
Pakatan won 17 seats, followed by Barisan Nasional (14) and Perikatan Nasional (five).
Negri Sembilan plunged into a political crisis after the 14 Barisan assemblymen from Umno withdrew support for Aminuddin’s government.
They claimed to have been left with no other option but to declare a loss of confidence as the Mentri Besar had failed to handle the state royal crisis.
However, state Ruler Tuanku Muhriz then decreed that Aminuddin continue with his duties until there was further clarity on the issue.
