Prominent philanthropist Jeyaratnam passes away at 101


IPOH: Prominent philanthropist Tan Sri V. Jeyaratnam has passed away.

His daughter Ratnamalar said Jeyaratnam died of natural causes at his home on Thursday (June 4) at 7.34am. He was 101.

"He was a devoted father who cherished family above all. He has touched many lives with his unwavering kindness and warmth.

"He also leaves behind a legacy as an accomplished criminal lawyer, of honour, service and love, which will guide us forever," she said when contacted.

Jeyaratnam, a respected lawyer, founded Yayasan Sultan Idris Shah, now known as Yayasan Ipoh, in 1982.

Yayasan Ipoh is a non-profit rehabilitation centre for children with disabilities.

He also served as the chairman of the Perak Turf Club for 22 years, earning him a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest-serving chairman of a turf club.

He leaves behind three children, Jeyarajah, Jeyamalar and Ratnamalar and two grandchildren - Shankar and Jeyanthi.

His wife, the late Puan Sri Dr Rajamalar Jeyaratnam, passed away in 2008 at the age of 78.
