New wild ginger species found in Lenggong

IPOH: A new species of wild ginger has been found in Lenggong, says Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

He said at the opening of the state-level International Forests Day here on Thursday (June 4) that Alpinia lenggongensis was found at Banjaran Bintang by researchers from Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan.

He said the plant could be found at elevations between 400m and 800m above sea level.

"It grows on riverbanks, about 8m to 20m from the edge of the rivers.

"It is uniquely identified by its translucent bracteoles and elongated petioles (leaf stalks)," he said in his speech.

Also present was Forestry Department director-general Datuk Zahari Ibrahim.
