IPOH: Dashcam footage submitted 10 days after an accident in a tunnel along Jalan Keramat-Pulai near here led police to conclude that a motorcyclist was responsible for the crash.
This followed an investigation initially hampered by conflicting accounts from those involved, police said in a statement.
The statement was issued in response to a viral post on the social media platform Threads in which a road user expressed dissatisfaction with the enforcement action taken over the accident.
Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the May 10 accident involved three vehicles: a car driven by a 26-year-old man, a second car driven by a 34-year-old woman, and a motorcycle ridden by a 20-year-old man.
He said investigators were initially unable to determine the exact cause of the collision as statements from the parties involved contradicted one another and no dashcam footage was provided when police reports were first lodged.
"Due to the conflicting versions of events and the absence of supporting video evidence, the case was classified as Refer to Magistrate while awaiting further evidence," he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 3).
ACP Najib said police received dashcam footage on May 20 that clearly captured the incident and enabled investigators to establish the actual sequence of events.
"Based on a detailed review of the footage, investigations found that the accident was caused by the motorcyclist's negligence," he said.
He added that following the findings, the rider was issued a summons under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to maintain control of his vehicle and causing an accident.
The man was also fined for riding without a valid licence.
ACP Najib stressed that police investigations are carried out professionally, transparently and based solely on the evidence and facts gathered during the investigation.
He said the outcome of the case shows the importance of objective evidence, particularly dashcam recordings, in helping investigators determine liability in traffic accidents.
He also urged the public to refrain from speculating or spreading inaccurate information regarding the case, warning that such actions could mislead the public and undermine confidence in the investigative process.
