KOTA KINABALU: A total of RM2.42mil worth of frozen chicken products were seized at the Sepanggar port after the authorities uncovered a false customs declaration that the imports were potatoes and peas.

Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the inspection on May 21 found the consignment in 14 containers, weighing over 404,232kg, believed to have originated from China and Hong Kong.

“The goods were brought in under falsified customs documentation. These goods have been packaged and ready to be marketed in the local market,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the operation began on May 19 together with the Customs Department, Health Ministry, Sabah Veterinary Services Department (DVS) and port authorities.

He said the case was being investigated under the Customs Act for making false certificates or documents, which carries penalties of up to RM500,000 fine or five years’ imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.

AKPS has also identified another 12 containers suspected of using the same modus operandi, involving 348,000kg of frozen chicken worth RM3.42mil, he added.

“It is now under monitoring and enforcement action,” he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said his agency would continue to work closely with other authorities to act against smuggling of goods through false declarations, as well as strengthen border controls to safeguard national security.

“AKPS views seriously any attempt to illegally import merchandise through false declarations or regulatory violations at the country’s entry points.

“Enforcement and inspections will continue to be enhanced through integrated collaboration with relevant agencies to ensure compliance with the law is always maintained,” he said.
