JOHOR BARU: Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi strongly condemns any form of spying, digital intrusion and misuse of technology.
The Johor Menteri Besar said he received a warning notification from technology company Apple, saying his iPhone linked to his personal account was the target of a mercenary spyware attack.
He said he viewed the incident seriously as it involves data security, communication confidentiality and individual personal rights.
"I take this matter seriously because it involves data security, communication confidentiality, personal rights and attempted invasion of a person's personal space.
"In this regard, I will file a police report and submit an official complaint to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) so that a thorough investigation can be conducted and appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the law," he said in a Facebook post on Friday (May 22).
In the post, he shared a screenshot of the warning he received from Apple on the attack, reported Bernama.
The notification said that the attack likely targeted him "specifically because of who you are or what you do."
"Mercenary spyware attacks, such as those using Pegasus from the NSO Group, are exceptionally rare and vastly more sophisticated than regular cybercriminal activity or consumer malware.
"These attacks cost millions of dollars and are individually deployed against a very small number of people, but the targeting is ongoing and global," read the notification.
