Cops nab suspect in Ranau teen's assault


KOTA KINABALU: Police arrested a 35-year-old man on Friday (May 22) for allegedly assaulting and threatening a teen outside a Ranau shop after the incident went viral on social media.

Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the local suspect was detained at a village house at around 9.30am.

He added that the suspect tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

"Checks revealed that he was connected to a murder case in 2014.

"The suspect will be detained to also assist investigations into three burglary cases under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which are still under police probe," he said in a statement.

In the incident at about 6pm on Tuesday (May 19), the suspect allegedly scolded the 19-year-old victim outside a grocery shop in Ranau.

"He is believed to have pulled out a knuckleduster while threatening the victim.

"The suspect then punched and kicked the victim, causing injuries to his lip and pain in his back and shoulder," Supt Mursalin said, adding that the suspect also allegedly threatened to kill the teen.

The probe is being conducted under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
