PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will deploy the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) to Nepal following devastating floods, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced in a statement on Sunday (Aug 30).
The National Security Council and the National Disaster Management Agency, in collaboration with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, have been tasked with coordinating directly with the Nepalese government to ensure the swift deployment of the rescue team.
Beyond assisting local search and rescue (SAR) operations, the SMART team is mandated to locate and evacuate affected Malaysians. They will work alongside the Malaysian Embassy in Nepal to coordinate humanitarian relief and safeguard the welfare of stranded citizens.
To support immediate relief efforts and long-term recovery in the flood-ravaged nation, the government has also pledged US$1mil in financial assistance to Nepal.
