KUALA LUMPUR: Fifteen people have been detained within 24 hours after they had allegedly ignited flares and ridden dangerously in an apparent stunt to promote a clothing store.
“One of the suspects – a 24-year-old man – was the shop owner,” said Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam.
The shop in Dengkil has been operating for six years.
He said that initial investigations revealed that the shop owner had hired several people to perform the stunts.
“Each of them was paid between RM50 and RM700,” he said.
The incident at Bukit Bintang here occurred at about 2am on Monday.
ACP Sazalee told a press conference yesterday that the 14 men and a woman, aged between 17 and 30, were detained in Batu Caves, Shah Alam, Dengkil and Kajang.
“The operation was conducted between noon and 8pm on Monday, less than 24 hours after the incident.
“We also seized two electric scrambler motorcycles and a four-wheel-drive vehicle,” he said.
He said that further checks revealed the scramblers are only permitted for off-road riding.
“We will issue summonses for that offence,” he said.
All of those detained have been remanded until tomorrow.
He said that police have opened an investigation under Section 290 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.
“Investigations are also being conducted under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act,” he said.
It was earlier reported that a group of people was believed to have ignited flares while riding on a four-wheel-drive vehicle along Jalan Sultan Ismail near a fast food restaurant in Bukit Bintang early Monday morning.
ACP Sazalee had said police found a video uploaded on social media showing several people travelling in a 4WD and two electric scrambler motorcycles.
They were seen lighting flares, too.
