KUALA LUMPUR: The newly- revised Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, which seeks to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and Public Prosecutor (PP), will be re-tabled on June 22, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic).
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the proposed amendment appeared to have garnered support from MPs across the political divide.
“God willing, we will table it on June 22 (the first day Parliament reconvenes). But on June 22, we will first table the statement from this meeting and explain what transpired.
“And we will also have the Bill there, enclosed together, and we hope we can proceed with the First Reading, then the Second Reading, and hopefully settle the Third Reading as well.
“I hope that when we bring this amendment, it will become a historic amendment for our country because since Merdeka until today, the functions of the AG and PP have existed together, and now we are creating a separation between the two.
“For me, this is history in the making, and once again I would like to thank everyone involved, especially the MPs in the committee,” she said after chairing the sixth meeting of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Constitutional Amendments Related to the Separation of the Roles of the AG and PP yesterday.
Asked on what was agreed upon during the meeting, Azalina said that Parliament will have a role in it.
“I think you have to wait and see. But everybody has agreed.
“That is the best compromise we have achieved between the executive and the legislative branches,” she said, without explaining further.
Pressed if the enclosed Bill has already been revised, she replied: “Yes, yes, of course. It is the version agreed upon by all parties.”
“I also requested representatives from the Opposition to support the government on this Bill, taking into account that this amendment will benefit the rakyat as a whole.
“And we would like to inform the public that this is exactly what institutional reform is all about, taking into account and ensuring that the roles of AG and the PP in our country are separated.
“So I hope this historic change will create a new precedent and set a new standard for our country in the years to come,” she said.
