SHAH ALAM: A series of operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Ampang Jaya has crippled four drug syndicates following the seizure of cannabis buds and methamphetamine worth RM17.8mil.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said a local man and three foreign men, as well as three foreign women, aged between 17 and 31, were arrested during the operations.
He said the operations, conducted between May 6 and 11, were carried out by the KLIA Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division in cooperation with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) auxiliary police and the Ampang Jaya police.
“In total, the four raids led to the seizure of 172.8kg of cannabis buds and 79kg of methamphetamine.
“The total amount seized was 251.8kg, estimated to be worth about RM17.8mil,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Comm Shazeli said initial investigations found that the suspects had no prior criminal records.
He said the foreigners who were detained were believed to have used social visit passes to carry out drug trafficking activities in the country.
In the operation on May 6, MAHB auxiliary police detected three suspicious bags during scanning at the KLIA terminal.
Further inspection uncovered 66 plastic packets containing compressed chunks believed to be cannabis buds weighing 72.6kg and valued at about RM5.8mil.
“A foreign man and two foreign women aged between 17 and 19 were subsequently arrested,” he said.
On May 9, police again detected four suspicious bags at the KLIA terminal, where further checks uncovered 136 plastic packets containing cannabis buds weighing 72.8kg and worth about RM5.85mil.
“A foreign man and woman, aged 30 and 31, were arrested.
“Initial urine screening found one of the suspects tested positive for drugs,” he added.
Meanwhile, Comm Shazeli said in the third case on May 10, two suspicious bags were detected at the KLIA terminal, leading to the seizure of 52 plastic packets containing cannabis buds weighing 27.4kg worth about RM2.2mil.
The case involved a 28-year-old foreign man believed to be from a neighbouring country.
On May 11, Comm Shazeli said the Ampang Jaya police patrol unit discovered 79 plastic packets containing substances believed to be methamphetamine, weighing about 79kg and worth RM3.95mil, inside a vehicle belonging to a local suspect.
He said all suspects have been remanded for 14 days and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
