Stronger govt voice needed for new era, say Pakatan reps

JOHOR BARU: The changing political landscape and the need for stronger government communications were among issues raised at the national Pakatan Harapan Convention.

Pahang delegate Datuk Dr Suhaimi Ibrahim said the government must ensure its achievements and policies are effectively communicated to the public.

The state PKR information chief questioned whether ordinary Malaysians were aware of job opportunities created by the government and understood the country’s economic growth plans.

“Do the makcik and pakcik know about the job opportunities generated and economic growth experienced by the country? Do youths in urban areas know what the Madani government has done for them?” he asked.

Suhaimi said opposition parties have been exploiting issues such as subsidies and the rising cost of living to spread misinformation and create doubts about the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Sarawak delegate Ahmad Nazib Johari said development in the state saw improvement under the current federal administration, including its commitment to strengthen the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and improvements in infrastructure, education and healthcare.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, as the state representative, cautioned Pakatan against assuming the people’s support and emphasised the potential for voter sentiment to shift.

“Politics has changed; sentiments have also changed. The people of today no longer want to see mere slogans but rather leaders who are capable of bringing stability, development and confidence to a state’s future.

“We saw this during the Sabah election, where voter sentiment shifted easily,” he said, adding that elected representatives who have served the people are not guaranteed a win.

Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari also urged Pakatan to continue championing national issues affecting the people.

“The Budi95 initiative has proven that, although it may not be popular, it has succeeded in providing stability for the rakyat.

“Savings made by the government through the initiative were channelled back to the people through assistance such as Sumbangan Asas Rahmah, Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and others,” he said.
