KUALA LUMPUR: An assistant superintendent of police was arrested for allegedly extorting RM5,000 from a foreigner in Bukit Bintang recently.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the incident was said to have happened at about 1.30am on March 14 when the victim claimed to have receive a call from the police informing him that his employer had been detained at a restaurant on suspicion of being involved in scams linked to call centres.
ACP Sazalee said the police officer claimed that the victim’s employer, a Chinese national, was a wanted criminal with records in Cambodia and China.
“Upon arriving at the location, the complainant found that his employer had been handcuffed for nearly an hour before being released,” he said in a statement.
The complainant alleged that he was forced to hand over RM5,000 in cash to secure the release of his employer.
ACP Sazalee said that on the same day at about 10pm, the complainant received another phone call from an individual requesting to meet in Ampang, Selangor.
“The complainant was then allegedly asked to hand over an additional RM2,500, purportedly to settle the case involving his employer.
“Dissatisfied with the actions of the police officer, the complainant lodged a police report,” he added.
ACP Sazalee said the police officer was later arrested and his handphone seized.
He added that the suspect was remanded for four days beginning May 16.
Based on initial investigations, the officer was said to have been offered RM300,000 by a man to detain the complainant’s employer for fraud-related offences.
