Married couple claims trial to child abuse charge


KOTA BHARU: A married couple pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Sunday (May 17) to a charge of abusing their nephew last April.

Wan Saiful Azuan Wan Idris, 31, and Yujas Nor Aida Jasmin Mohd Yusoff, 29, entered the plea after the charge was read out to them before Judge Zulkifli Abllah.

The couple was jointly charged with abusing a 10-year-old boy in a manner likely to cause physical injury at a house in Kampung Sungai Mas, Machang, at about 10pm on April 19.

The charge, framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.

The court allowed bail of RM8,000 for each accused with one surety and fixed June 15 for mention and document submission. – Bernama
