Two men nabbed for doing 'wheelie' stunts on SPE

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men who performed dangerous “wheelie” stunts while riding high-powered motorcycles along the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) were arrested by police early Saturday (May 16).

The local suspects, aged 31 and 36, were detained by a team from the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department’s Intelligence/Operations Unit at about 6am to assist in investigations.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the arrests were made after police detected a viral video on Threads on Friday (May 15).

He said the footage clearly showed the two riders performing dangerous wheelie stunts while participating in a moving motorcycle convoy.

“Checks found that the incident occurred at about 11am on May 9 along the SPE Highway from the city centre heading towards Putrajaya.

“The dangerous act is believed to have been carried out by the two riders while travelling on high-powered motorcycles,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

ACP Zamzuri added that the video was believed to have been uploaded by the Threads user involved.

Following the arrests, police also seized a motorcycle to facilitate investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding.

“Among the actions taken were applying for CCTV footage at the location, recording the suspects’ statements and documenting the motorcycles involved.

“The two suspects were brought before the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court today and police obtained a one-day remand order to assist investigations,” he said.

He also warned road users against turning public roads into venues for dangerous stunt riding that could endanger lives.

“Kuala Lumpur traffic police view such dangerous acts seriously and will not compromise with any individual who breaks the law and threatens public safety,” he said.
