BUTTERWORTH: A united, progressive and competitive labour movement for educators and civil servants is needed to consistently and effectively defend their rights, says the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP).
In a statement on Friday (May 15), NUTP said progress in the country cannot be separated from the welfare of workers and the strength of the education system.
"Teachers who are valued and workers who are protected are the foundation for building a stable, competitive and dignified civil society.
"With Teacher's Day approaching we call on all Malaysians to continue to respect the teaching profession and work together to defend reform efforts that elevate the dignity of workers and educators in the country," it read.
It futher said that in conjunction with the celebration of Teacher's Day 2026, the National NUTP would like to express its highest appreciation to over 400,000 teachers nationwide who continue to serve with dedication, patience and sincerity in shaping the future generations of Malaysia.
"Teachers are not just conveyors of knowledge, but value builders, creators of hope and main driving forces in the development of the nation via education.
"In an increasingly challenging world, the services and sacrifices of teachers should continue to be respected and empowered through fair and progressive policies.
"Over 400,000 educators in this country play a vital role in ensuring that Malaysian children have access to quality education regardless of background, race and region," it said.
NUTP also expressed its appreciation to former human resources minister Steven Sim for his commitment throughout his two years at the ministry.
"The country saw a significant wave of labour reforms with eight successfully implemented.
"The reforms not only strengthened worker protection but opened up space for a fairer, modern and humane employment system.
"NUTP appreciates the approach of being open to dialogue and negotiation with trade unions as it is a positive development towards strengthening the relationship between the government, workers and civil servants.
"The approach of listening to the voices of the grassroots and understanding the real reality on the ground is important in ensuring that a policy truly benefits the workers including educators," it read.
