PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia will not consider supporting any pardon for fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low (pic), describing the matter as a "non-issue" for Putrajaya.
Anwar said any decision on a possible pardon application involving Jho Low was entirely up to US authorities and was not something Malaysia intended to pursue.
"There is no issue. We are not going to consider that," he told reporters in Negri Sembilan on Friday (May 15) when asked about reports surrounding Jho Low’s alleged pardon application in the United States.
Asked if the Malaysian government would formally oppose any such move by the US government, Anwar said Malaysia would not take that route.
"No, again (it's) the US' decision as far as we are concerned, we are not going that route. We are not supporting it.
"But of course for the US, it’s their own business," he said.
Responding to remarks by 1MDB task force chairman Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani that Jho Low should not be pardoned and should instead return to Malaysia, Anwar reiterated that the matter was not an issue for his administration.
"No, we have made it very clear. To me, it’s a non-issue. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a non-issue.
"I’m not aware that he has submitted, or even submitted (the pardon to US President Donald Trump).
"It’s not an issue that we should discuss. But he is still undergoing this process in court," he said.
It was reported earlier this week that Jho Low was seeking a presidential pardon from Trump, based on a post on the US Justice Department's website.
