Eighth body found in Pangkor boat capsize


IPOH: Another body was found in the waters off Pulau Pangkor on Thursday (May 14), bringing the death toll from Monday’s (May 11) boat capsize involving undocumented Indonesian migrants to eight.

Marine Police Region One Operations Headquarters commanding officer Deputy Supt Mazre Che Mahmod said the body was found floating by the search and rescue (SAR) team at about 11.30am, approximately three nautical miles from Tukun Terendak.

"The identity of the victim has yet to be established.

"The operation is continuing to locate the remaining six missing victims,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

The SAR operation entered its fourth day on Thursday (May 14).

The Perak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said that the search is now focused on seven sectors covering 219.01 square nautical miles.

In a statement on Thursday, it said the operation, which resumed at 7am, involved air and sea assets from MMEA, the Royal Malaysian Navy and the Marine Police.

A boat believed to be carrying 37 Indonesians capsized in the waters off Pulau Pangkor while en route to several destinations in Malaysia on Monday (May 11).
