Bruneian police foil contraband smuggling attempt near Pulau Chermin

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Marine Police (PolMar) of the Operations Department, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), foiled an attempt to smuggle contraband into the country through the waters near Pulau Chermin on Thursday (Aug 20).

According to the RBPF, while conducting patrols and surveillance in the waters of Brunei Bay, a PolMar patrol boat detected a suspicious vessel in the vicinity of Pulau Chermin.

The vessel was successfully intercepted along the riverbank near Kampong Sungai Besar after the suspect fled the scene on foot.

An inspection of the vessel uncovered contraband cigarettes of various brands, comprising 150 cartons of Era Premium, 150 cartons of Era Black Menthol, 10 cartons of Grow Black Ice and two cartons of Win Mild.

The case is being investigated under Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Order 2006.

All seized items, including the vessel, have been handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for investigation and action.

The RBPF said it will continue to intensify patrols and surveillance to ensure that the country’s waters remain free from criminal activities. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
