Boy, 11, dies in hospital after being pulled from river in Manggatal


KOTA KINABALU: An 11-year-old boy found unconscious after being swept away by river currents while fishing at Sungai Rampayan in Manggatal died in the hospital shortly after being taken there.

Kota Kinabalu City OCPD Asst Comm Kasim Muda said Muhammad Hamizan Aqil Ahmad received CPR at the scene at 4.17pm on Wednesday (May 14) and was rushed to the Likas Women and Children’s Hospital, where he passed away at 5.46pm.

In the 3.05pm incident, the victim had gone to fish at the river with nine friends.

The victim and a friend reportedly strayed from the group and were swept away by the current.

Based on initial information, ACP Kasim said, the victim’s friend made it to safety and sought help from villagers before personnel from the Manggatal police station rushed to the scene.

"A team from the Lintas fire station arrived at the scene at about 4pm and the victim was found at 4.17pm," he said in a statement on Thursday (May 14).

He advised the public to remain vigilant and supervise children near rivers or waterways to avoid unwanted incidents.

"We are conducting further investigations to determine the cause of the incident," he said.
