Penang Port tightens hantavirus checks at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal

PETALING JAYA: Penang Port Commission said it has increased hantavirus precautions at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal after a health advisory.

Its chairman, Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, said Malaysia's Health Ministry issued the advisory after international reports of cases on a cruise ship. He said Malaysia has reported no cases.

Yeoh said the terminal will increase ship sanitation inspections and rodent monitoring. He said the measures follow International Health Regulations and involve the Health Ministry and other agencies.

Yeoh said terminal health facilities remained on standby for suspected cases. He said authorities increased disease surveillance and strengthened cooperation with the Veterinary Services Department and local authorities on vector control and environmental hygiene.

Yeoh advised passengers and crew to avoid contact with rodents and droppings. He said they should use masks and gloves when cleaning contaminated areas and seek medical care for symptoms.
