Two ex-clinic workers charged in woman’s death during alleged abortion

KUALA LUMPUR: Two former clinic workers pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (May 12) to a charge of causing the death of a woman while allegedly performing an abortion two years ago.

Philomena Mathias, 83, and Rusbur Kaur Partab Singh, 73, were jointly charged with causing the death of a 45-year-old woman by an act allegedly intended to cause a miscarriage.

The two women were charged with committing the offence at a clinic on Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang at about 5.30 pm on Oct 22, 2024.

The charge, under Section 314 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine if convicted.

Magistrate Illi Marisqa Khalizan allowed bail of RM3,000 each, with one surety, and fixed June 29 for mention of the case.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri, while both accused were represented by lawyer George Loh. – BERNAMA
