Thunderstorms and heavy rain expected in 11 states until 5pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 11 states, effective until 5pm on Tuesday (May 12).

In the north, affected areas include several districts in Kedah (Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu) and Pulau Pinang (Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Selatan).

The warning covers a large part of Perak, including Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim.

On the east coast, severe weather is expected in Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Machang, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang) and Terengganu (Besut, Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman).

In Pahang, the alert includes Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Bentong, Maran and Rompin.

The warning also covers Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat), Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin) and the entire state of Johor.

In Sarawak, the affected areas are Lubok Antu in Sri Aman, Pakan and Julau in Sarikei, Kanowit in Sibu, Song in Kapit, Miri and Marudi in Miri, and Limbang.

For Sabah, the alert includes Pedalaman (Sipitang, Tenom, Beaufort, Nabawan, Keningau and Tambunan), Pantai Barat (Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud), Tawau (Tawau and Kunak) and Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 2.05pm on Tuesday.
